5 Signs Your Pet Is Overheating – And How to Cool Them Down Fast

Keep your pet safe in extreme heat with these life-saving tips.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat stress—especially for pets in hot climates like Dubai. Dogs and cats can’t regulate their body temperature the same way humans can, making them highly vulnerable to overheating, heatstroke, and dehydration.

Here are 5 warning signs your pet might be overheating—and what to do if it happens.

☀️ 1. Excessive Panting

Panting is how dogs and cats cool themselves down. But rapid, heavy panting—especially when it continues after rest—is an early sign of heat stress.

What to do:

  • Move your pet to a shaded or air-conditioned area.
  • Offer fresh, cool water.
  • Apply a cooling vest (like our best-selling Pet Cooling Vest) to help reduce core temperature.

🥵 2. Lethargy or Weakness

If your pet suddenly seems tired, unresponsive, or struggles to walk, take action immediately. Heat exhaustion can quickly turn dangerous.

What to do:

  • Stop all activity and bring them indoors.
  • Use a damp towel on their belly, paws, and neck.
  • Call your vet if symptoms don’t improve quickly.

👅 3. Bright Red or Pale Gums

Changes in gum colour often signal poor blood circulation—a red flag during overheating.

What to do:

  • Check gums gently.
  • If they’re bright red, pale, or tacky to the touch, seek emergency vet care.
  • Continue cooling your pet during transport.

🌡 4. Vomiting or Diarrhoea

These symptoms may indicate your pet’s internal temperature has risen dangerously high—often a sign of heatstroke.

What to do:

  • Cool your pet with lukewarm water (not ice cold).
  • Contact your vet immediately.
  • Never force water if your pet is vomiting—offer small sips only.

🐾 5. Hot or Dry Paws & Nose

When your pet’s paws feel unusually warm or their nose seems dry and cracked, it could mean they’re struggling to stay cool.

What to do:

  • Apply our Natural Paw Balm to soothe and hydrate sensitive paw pads.
  • Avoid walking your pet during midday sun—early mornings and late evenings are safest.
  • Try cooling accessories like vests and mats to regulate their temperature.

✅ How to Prevent Overheating

  • Keep your pet hydrated at all times.
  • Use evaporative cooling vests during walks.
  • Never leave pets in parked cars.
  • Walk on grass, not pavement.
  • Apply paw balm daily to protect skin from burns and cracking.
